New Illinois Continuing Education Requirement for Massage

Sexual harassment continuing education is now a requirement for massage therapists as a provision to license renewal, beginning January 1, 2020.

The Illinois Division of Professional Regulation (IDFPR) passed a law in 2019 requiring anyone licensed by IDFPR, including licensed massage therapists, to complete a one-hour course in sexual harassment prevention training. Sexual harassment training will be required every renewal period. This email serves as a courtesy reminder to all ABMP members practicing in Illinois.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training 1130.400

The sexual harassment training must be presented in a classroom setting by an existing CE provider approved by the Division, and must address the following topics:

  1. Defining sexual harassment, and specifying its forms and types;
  2. Explaining what to do if one experiences or witnesses unwelcome sexual misconduct;
  3. Reporting sexual harassment; and
  4. Understanding “whistleblower” protections

Completion of such a course is now a condition of license renewal. The new rule does not increase the number of continuing education hours required to renew a license, as the training may count toward meeting your required CE credit hours. Like all other CE courses, you must receive and retain a Certificate of Completion that includes your name, the name of the sponsor or provider, the date, and the number of hours completed.
