Colorado COVID-19 State Update: Re-opening Plan

RE: Massage therapists, estheticians, and cosmetologists may return to work May 1, 2020.

The Government Relations team that represents ABMP, ASCP, AHP, and ANP has been working with the Governor’s office and DORA and received Governor Polis’s April 27, 2020, guidance, which allows for massage therapists, estheticians, and cosmetologists to return to work May 1, 2020. This document provides (https://covid19.colorado.gov/safer-at-home/safer-at-home-personal-services) all the information you need to know to open safely this Friday, if you chose to reopen.

The document applies to employers, employees, and sole practitioners. Practicing Safer at Home Personal Services as outlined requires daily temperature checks for all workers, masks, gloves, social distancing where practical, and a lot of sanitizing. Regarding your clients, the guidelines require temperature checks (https://covid19.colorado.gov/symptom-screening), contactless payment options when possible, and masks on every client. The guidelines ban walk-in appointments and communal gatherings in waiting rooms. NOTE: These documents are a work in progress. We are seeking clarification on the provision that personal service providers can only do services that don’t require a client to remove their masks.

With all of this said, keep in mind that Governor Polis is allowing local jurisdictions to do what is right for them. So, you need to be aware of your county and city orders. For example: Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Jeffco, Boulder, and Pitkin Counties all extended their stay at home orders through May 8, 2020. In Gunnison County, all “non-medical” massage is limited through May 27, 2020. Other counties and cities may require waivers. It is vitally important that you go to the webpages of your counties, cities, and towns to see if there are local restrictions or waivers required before going back to work.

And, just because you may be able to return to work does not mean you have to return to work. ABMP, ASCP, AHP, and ANP continue to encourage you to do what is right for you. Unemployment benefits (https://www.careeronestop.org/WorkerReEmployment/UnemploymentBenefits/am...) appear to be available through the state for those who are unable to work due to risk of exposure to COVID-19. Whether you return to work or choose to stay at home, we cannot adequately accentuate the importance of staying safe and healthy.
