West Virginia Signs on to the Cosmetology Compact

AHP is thrilled to share major news for cosmetologists in West Virginia. Governor Patrick Morrisey signed into law House Bill 5087, making West Virginia the newest member of the Cosmetology Licensure Compact (Compact).

The Compact modernizes how cosmetologists work across state lines. Instead of navigating confusing, slow, and expensive license reciprocity processes, the Compact will create a multistate licensing system. Moving your practice to a new state will be easier without the usual administrative headaches, allowing you to focus on the career you want to build.

What the Compact Means for Your Career

Here’s how the Compact will positively impact you:

  • Work in multiple states without applying for a new license in each state. Ideal for cosmetologists living in border communities, traveling cosmetologists, and anyone expanding clientele. (You still need to notify the state board where you plan to practice.)
  • Less paperwork and admin delays leading to reduced licensing barriers.
  • More career options, from editorial and event work to seasonal opportunities.
  • Streamlined information-sharing across states, supporting professional standards and reducing fraud in the profession.

Your State Is Now Part of a Popular National Movement

West Virginia now joins 10 others that have already signed on: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. The more states that join, the more valuable the Compact becomes for working cosmetologists.

When Will Multistate Licenses Be Issued?

We’re excited to see how the Compact expands your mobility and opens new opportunities to grow your career. AHP will continue supporting you and sharing updates as the Compact rolls out.

Before you go: The Compact’s multistate license is optional. You can keep your current single‑state license if that works best for you. If you choose to participate, the multistate license allows practice only in states that join the Compact. More states are expected to join, expanding mobility over time.
