Big Win for Illinois Beauty Pros

We’ve got exciting news for licensed estheticians and cosmetologists in Illinois—and it’s worth celebrating! Governor JB Pritzker signed into law Senate Bill 2154, expanding your scope of practice and opening the door to offer more in-demand services. This is a major step forward for hair and skin care pros across the state.

What’s New?
The bill updates the definitions of cosmetology and esthetics to allow the use of superficial exfoliants, which means you can now legally offer:

  • Microdermabrasion
  • Hydrodermabrasion
  • Dermaplaning

These treatments are client favorites, and now they can be part of your regular service menu. A word to the wise: Using any techniques or products that affect the living layers of the skin are still off-limits and could lead to disciplinary action.

Why This Matters
This new law is a game changer! It’s a win for your business, your clients, and the future of the beauty industry. The time to level up your career is now!

The new law gives you:

  • Additional, enhanced services to offer
  • A competitive edge (in a crowded market)
  • Greater earning potential

We’re proud to share that AHP supported this bill as soon as it was introduced in the Illinois legislature. The new law aligns scope of practice with the fast-paced evolution of your profession—and we’re thrilled to see progress!
